I don't normally make political statements on this blog, but this issue is so important I feel like I should.
Right now, there is a constitutional amendment up for public vote in California that would codify marriage as being a union between a man and a woman, nullifying thousands of gay marriages that have happened since the California State Supreme Court ruled that a prior law forbidding it was illegal. In California, once amendments are passed they are extremely difficult to get rid of, so if this vote passes, it's going to stick and even if thinking changes in the future, the law will be quite rigid.
Right now, there are misleading commercials being run telling people that not passing this law will impose teaching of gay marriage in schools (buh?), will threaten the tax exempt status of churches (buh?), and that not passing this law will cause more lawsuits (buh?).
If you're in California, please, please, please go to the polls and vote no on 8 next month. If you're not in California but are an American citizen, you can still help. Right now the Mormons are mobilization their nationwide base to convince voters that Prop 8 will somehow protect them from the scourge of gay marriage, and they have a significant advantage in money and donations.
You can visit No on 8 to donate or volunteer time. Please help ensure equality in California.
