After several months of hard work, mostly be Dries Buytaert himself (and I tell you, that guy is tireless it seems. I don’t think I could do what he does) but with a lot of support from Dries Knapen, Steven Wittens, Angela Byron, Robert Douglass and a few others, the Drupal Association is officially born.

This whole thing started last summer, when Dries visited San Francisco to talk to several open source organizations about their experiences with a foundation. After coming away with a lot of interesting ideas and experience, work went into motion just before DrupalCon Brussels, and a talk was given about it (that I sadly missed, as I was at a different talk). From there it went into discussions of what to do.

It took awhile to get everything set — forming a Belgian corporation, getting financials taken care of, and doing all of the paperwork that’s necessary to form a real, legitimate organization, but it’s been done.

As for myself, I was invited to be a member of the assembly, and took part in the vote for the initial board of directors. I’ve helped a little bit, mostly through commentary, and watched with satisfaction as Dries successfully led a group of people into creating a real, live organization. Dries has a lot of good leadership attributes, and I believe credit for the success of the organization will be almost all on Dries, just for being able to motivate people to do the things that need to be done.

The announcement can be read on the association website, and you can digg this! it too.
