Last Friday, my time at Sony Music came to an end. The end wasn't abrupt, I had several weeks to prepare, but the top level of the group I worked in decided that it was time to end remote development and bring everybody in-house. They offered full relocation to New York which would allow me to keep my position, but I love the Bay Area too much. I did give serious thought to the idea of moving, because working with Sony Music has been great. But it does not match my current personal goals to leave here.
So as soon as they told me they were ending the remote positions, I did a little feeling out of the Drupal world to see what would be available. I had several interesting conversations right away, and over the first week I learned that there is a lot of opportunity out there at all levels of Drupal skill. The space that I work in is extremely popular, and Drupal is being turned to as a valuable platform at many levels, despite the strengths of some of the competition.
I had a lot of great opportunities, and to be honest the decision was difficult. Several people presented me with very interesting proposals, but I eventually selected IO1 where I am coming aboard on Friday to be their Director of Research. From a practical standpoint, that means I will continue to spend a chunk of my time working on Panels and Views, and I will also get to spend a chunk of my time working on new and interesting things to grow IO1's business. I do have a nice set of plans for what I'd like to accomplish already, and the things they need go very well with the things I want to do.
Plus, IO1 has been quietly active within the Drupal community for a number of years. I met Fintan, the CEO of IO1 back at DrupalCon Brussels where we chatted for some time over beer. I immediately liked him. He is gregarious and knowledgeable, he has a good sense of business, and he is willing to chase down opportunity when it presents itself. No business can operate successfully without some level of risk, and Fintan seems to be very good at choosing the right risks to take.
Also, and this was very very important to me. Back when Views 2 was initially being developed, and I was under a serious flood of "Drupal 6 is useless, there are no Views!!!" and I was working my butt off to get something, Fintan committed 32 hours of developer time at my disposal. Normally in the Drupal world, help comes in the form of itch-scratching. I see this thing I want fixed, I help you fix it, everybody wins. However, being given a resource that I was able to direct -- and who was clearly incredibly competent -- was a big deal. In that week, Views advanced significantly because I was able to get some important and difficult tasks out of the way, and IO1 directly contributed to Views 2's first beta release only a few weeks later.
That kind of cooperation has always meant something to me. I've had several Drupal organizations promise help and/or developer time in Views, but never actually come through. Some of them rather large, actually. Some of these promises repeated often. IO1 has been unique in following through on that promise. And while not everyone knows the name IO1, I know that they have quietly supported very big projects in the past. They have donated money and developer time on various drupal.org initiatives and asked for very little in return, because they knew that their business benefited.
This impression, plus the actual job description and title being very ideal for me, made IO1 the winning choice for me. I think the future is going to be very interesting for everyone. I get to continue my passion of working on community projects, and IO1 gets to focus my attention on the things that will most benefit them. As far as I can tell, everybody wins.

Congrats!
Earl, you're such a valued member of the Drupal community and we'd never want to lose you. I think everyone got a little worried about the press release from IO1 but this definitely helps explain your situation in ways that a press release never can. Sony is going to miss you, but its IO1, the Drupal community and your family that wins here.
Yeah. The IO1 release isn't
Yeah. The IO1 release isn't really targeted at the community, so it doesn't quite explain things satisfactorily. I think for the community this is a big win.
SCHWEET!
I'm so freakin' psyched that something good came out of this whole thing. WOO!
Congrats!
Just saw the tweets about this and didn't know what to think. But after reading this I can only say: well done, more power to you! Views and Panels are the reason why I stuck with Drupal so I wish you all the best in your new job.
Congratulations
Congratulations Earl and IO1. Hopefully it means you get to spend some extra time in Europe, and that we might be able to catch up in person from time to time! :)
Congratulations!
Awesome! I hope things work out — and congratulations! :)
Excellent news for Drupal
I hope this means we'll see Panels for D7 and an immanent release of Pandora! :)
Congratulations on finding what truly sounds like the ideal home for you. Hopefully this is a big win for you and IO1. It certainly sounds good for Drupal.
Congrats and Thanks
When I saw your tweet last week about leaving Sony I started to get worried not only for the Drupal community but for myself. Views is utterly amazing. I can't tell you how many times I have done something in Views and then told my wife, "If I ever meet Earl, I am buying him a beer, or 3." Every person that has ever built a Drupal website should feel the same way. Thank you so much for all your hard work and thank GOD you are staying in the Drupal ecosystem. You are the man Earl Miles!

Everyone?
... man, he'd be seriously drunk if everyone who's ever built a Drupal site bought him 3 beers... LOL!
Congrats, Earl! We're all happy for you as well as breathing a sigh of relief that you found a home that cares about your modules. :)

Everyone?
If everyone who has built a site with views were to buy Earl a beer, he would be set to become a fairly substantial beer distributor.
Another Congratulations
Congratulations Earl. Thanks for sharing on your decision as I think a lot of IT folks feel encouraged whenever they see one of their own seize on a new opportunity. You definitely deserve to be one of Drupal's best success stories.
Cool!
I saw Fintan tweeting last week that he had some big announcement. That is great news! Congratulations.
Time to come out from behind the proverbial "white label" for those guys.
Since you'll be working with John Morahan, Fintan et al, maybe you'll be making a trip to UK/Ireland?
Ireland's DrupalCamp is 15 & 16th of May! In the lovely Burren. Nice place for a holiday. *hint hint*
and a link too...
Oh and I suppose you'd like a link for that!

Congrats!
What an exciting opportunity! Good to know that you can continue to raise that beautiful girl by California's beaches. Still trying to figure out what she thinks might be great about snow! Congratulations!
Rock On
Keep up the work with panels! It Rocks
congratulations Earl!! That
congratulations Earl!! That sounds like an excellent position, and a great way to continue sharing - and building upon - your passion for all things Drupal. Not to mention you get to stay in CA. All the best to you and yours!
Good Luck Earl
Do you know you have over 12,000 commits to Drupal? Your dedication to the platform is awesome and I am so glad you are continuing to push Drupal and what it can become. May I wish you the best of luck in the future Earl, and I'd like to be another one added to your "who can buy me a beer" list.
Congratulations mate!
Congratulations, Earl.
Congratulations, Earl. I just heard the good news. IO1 is very lucky to have you.
