So, Views 2 is now basically feature complete. Oh, there's still a few really rough spots --

  • Most of the help files are stubs
  • None of the arguments convert from Views 1 to Views 2
  • None of the settings on your fields will convert from Views 1 to Views 2
  • Nothing that isn't directly from core will convert from Views 1 to Views 2 just now; well ok, CCK stuff probably will.
  • Taxonomy 'depth' isn't supported -- it was broken in Views 1 and I didn't think of a way to fix it until just a couple of days ago.
  • Still not enough validation though I covered some really obvious spots

As such, I've gone ahead and released the first beta. Now, I'm sure it's still plenty buggy. But the API isn't going to change much, except to correct astounding errors.

At this time, the focus is shifting:

  • Implement any "I can't believe I forgot this" features
  • Fix bugs
  • Write docs

For the most part, 'features' are now going to wait for 2.1 -- I've put off a few big ones (Sorry, the OR got pushed), unless it's a really big deal. I'd like to keep the beta period relatively short. I'd like to see module developers start to port stuff up. I'll happily assist developers on IRC, though a lot of the time I'll expect you to at least read some of the examples in the modules directory -- a lot is explained just by reading node.views.inc.

Bless you

How detailed are the docs?

How detailed are the docs? I'm not able to pitch in with the technical development but I'm an experienced Views UI user so I might be able to help somewhere in there.

Very nice

This is very nice...I've already put the module into "production" for my site (after backing up the site). I didn't play with the alpha versions at all, but in 30 minutes I was able to produce the blocks that I needed using Views 2.

A couple months ago, I blogged about not really needing Views before I updated my site from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6. While this is essentially true, I found that I really missed Views. I hadn't realized how much Views has become part of the Drupal experience for me. Views just makes things so much easier...

Thanks for the hard work

A lot of dedication has gone into this. Thanks to Earl and everybody else involved.

Project Page

I think we could gave an update on Views Project Page.
http://drupal.org/project/views

Which states something from:
'Important: Views 2 alpha is not feature complete. It is missing lots of features, but you can play with it, at least.'
To something like
'Note: Views 2 Beta is not feature complete and is not bug free. Please join the Views development team, to achieve a better and faster final release'

hug

a big hug merlin! really great work!!

Thank you thank you thank you.

Views along with CCK is what makes Drupal stand out from the crowd.

I'm so excited that these are nearly ready for D6.

Thank you for putting in all of this hard work.

We wuv you

Thank you so much for your hard work on views. You should get a medal :)

Thank you!!

Just starting to play with it, and the module looks freaking awesome! I can't believe how much more of a pleasant and powerful experience this is going to be.

Just to make sure...

... because I can't find anything about it in the most obvious places: there won't be Views 2 for Drupal 5, right?

There will not be; a couple

There will not be; a couple of architecture designs that Views 2 relies upon do not exist in Drupal 5.

Drupal is nothing without

Drupal is nothing without views! Great work and I hope to see it completed soon. So many other modules are on hold until views is good to go. You have drupanity by the balls.
